Mum, What does 'New Year, New You' mean?

A short poem for celebrating achievements as we move into a new year.
Happy New Year! A ‘New Year, New You’.
‘But Mum, what does “New Year, New You" mean?’
‘Well….’
New Year is a time for celebrating you.
It’s a time for being proud of the things you do.
Look to the future and into the past.
And consider all the things you want to last.
It could be the moment your team won the cup
A lot of skill and a little bit of luck.
Or being awarded on the school stage
That feeling of cool would last for days.
Or visiting the principal to collect your banner
7 years of hard work, like climbing a ladder.
Handing in your work knowing you did your best
Your report shows you’ve been seen, which is part of life's test.
You’re constantly recognised for being kind
It’s a rule we have, but really more of a guide.
You made me so proud in ’25
Kindness is a trait I hope you keep alive.
New Year isn’t all sweetness and light
Sometimes there are things we don’t get right.
New Year is a time to look back and reflect
To decide on things we want to reject.
Know in your heart what’s right and what’s wrong
Don’t dwell on the past, acknowledge and move on
So let this be a time for celebrating you
There’s so much in ’26 that you can do.
Now moments of glory come with hard work
It’s the secret sauce you don’t want to shirk
A fresh leaf in life, 365 new days to ponder
New Year, New You, what will you do, I wonder?
